Dictate License Agreement

This agreement covers the official Dictate build: the installer and updates published by On Point Tech Solutions LLC ("On Point Tech", "we") at optechsol.llc. By installing or using that build you agree to it.

1. Evaluation

You may install and use Dictate, with every feature, free of charge for 30 days from the first time you run it. This is the evaluation period. It exists so you can find out whether Dictate earns a place in your day before you pay for it.

2. License required after the evaluation

Dictate is not free software. If you keep using the official build after the evaluation period, you are required to buy a license.

A license is a single payment of $1.99. There is no subscription and no renewal. One license covers one person on up to three computers. License keys work without an internet connection.

3. What we will never do

We do not enforce section 2 with technology, and we promise not to start.

• Dictate does not lock, expire, slow down, or turn off any feature when the evaluation period ends or at any time afterward.
• Dictate deletes the audio of a dictation right after it is turned into text. It is never kept, uploaded, or reviewed by us.
• Dictate never withholds or locks the text it produces. It types into your cursor the same way whether or not a license is active.
• After the evaluation period, the official build shows a reminder that a license is required. It appears at most once a day, never during a dictation, and it closes the moment you ask it to.
• A license key turns the reminder off. That is the only thing it changes.

We would rather you pay because Dictate was worth it than because we cornered you.

4. Your dictations and your device

Dictate turns your voice into text on the computer it is running on, using a speech model that lives on that computer. Nothing about your voice is sent anywhere to produce the text. The audio for a dictation is deleted the moment the text is ready.

Dictate also checks our download server for a newer version when it starts and again every few hours after that. That check sends nothing but a version number, never anything about your dictations.

Once, when you finish first-run setup, Dictate sends us an install notice: the app version, the kind of computer it is on, a random install id made on your machine, and the email address you type into the setup window if you choose to type one. The box is optional and an empty box is fine. Nothing about your voice or your words is in it, and it is sent once, not on a schedule.

You are responsible for what you dictate and where it lands, the same as with typing. Check anything that matters before you send it or rely on it.

5. The optional polish step

Dictate can clean up grammar and false starts in the text it just produced. This step is off by default. If you turn it on and add your own Anthropic API key, the dictated text (never the audio) is sent to Anthropic using that key so it can be cleaned up. On Point Tech does not receive your dictations or your key.

6. How a license key works

A license key is checked on your own computer against a signature we sign when we issue it. Activating a key never sends anything about your computer anywhere. The three-computer limit in section 2 is the term you agree to, not something this check counts or enforces. On Point Tech does not receive your dictations through this or any other part of Dictate.

7. Payments

License payments are one-time purchases of a software license from On Point Tech Solutions LLC, a for-profit company. They are not charitable contributions and are not tax deductible as such. If a license is not right for you, write to us within 14 days of paying and we will refund it.

8. The name and the mark

The name Dictate as used for this product, and its logo, belong to On Point Tech. A modified version of this software that you share with others has to use a different name and logo.

9. No warranty

Dictate is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. Speech-to-text and the optional polish step can make mistakes. Check anything that matters before you rely on it or send it to someone else.

10. Limit of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, On Point Tech's total liability for any claim about Dictate is limited to the amount you paid us for your license, or 50 US dollars if you have not bought one.

11. General

California law governs this agreement. If one part of it cannot be enforced, the rest stays in effect. We may update this agreement for future versions of Dictate; the version that shipped with your copy keeps applying to that copy. Section 3 is a commitment we will not remove.
