Key Takeaways
- Every HighLevel Voice AI agent runs on two layers of instructions. Your prompt says what the agent does. A set of system prompts underneath says how it talks.
- Those system prompts are now visible. Switch the agent to Advanced mode and click View System Prompts to read them.
- They cover personality, date and time awareness, numbers and speech rules, email confirmation and appointment booking.
- You can edit any of them for one agent. Apply Recommended puts them back to HighLevel's latest version, and Clear All removes them completely.
- Edit only when you have a real reason, like how your service area's addresses get read out. HighLevel tests the defaults, and custom edits become yours to maintain.
A caller gives their phone number and the AI reads it back as "five hundred fifty-five million." Or it confirms an email address wrong, and the booking confirmation never arrives. Those are the moments that make a business owner unplug a voice agent for good. This post walks through Andrew's tutorial from HighLevel's Content Army on exposed system prompts for Voice AI, rewritten for owners who want an AI receptionist that sounds like a person. On Point Tech Solutions is a Go High Level consultant in Los Gatos, and we set up Voice AI for Go High Level San Jose clients, so here is what these prompts are and when you should touch them.
Two layers of instructions behind every Voice AI agent
When you build a Voice AI agent in HighLevel, you write its main prompt. That is the job description. It is a support agent, it books estimates, it answers questions about hours and pricing. That part has always been yours.
Underneath it sits a second layer HighLevel writes and tests for you. These system prompts handle the small stuff an AI gets wrong on the phone. How to say a zip code. How to handle "next Tuesday." How to spell back an email. How to sound relaxed instead of scripted. Andrew's point in the video is that these prompts are much longer and more refined than anything most of us would write in the main prompt box, and they are a big part of why the agents sound good out of the box.
Until now that layer was a black box. Now you can open it.
Where to find the system prompts
Go to AI Agents, then Voice AI, and open your agent from the agent list. Under the agent's goals, click the switch at the bottom to move into Advanced mode. You will see your main prompt section on top, and below it a View System Prompts dropdown. Open it and every module is listed.
- Personality sets tone and pacing. Short human phrases like "got it" and "makes sense," natural short pauses, no long delays.
- Date and time awareness gives the agent context so "tomorrow at two" lands on the right day.
- Numbers and speech rules tells it how to say digits. Phone numbers, house numbers, flat numbers and zip codes get read one digit at a time, so 1 2 3 never turns into one hundred twenty-three.
- Email confirmation covers spelling back an address so the confirmation actually reaches the caller.
- Appointment booking covers how the agent looks for open slots, confirms them and deals with unclear answers.
Editing a prompt, and getting back to safe
Each module has an edit icon. Click it and you can change the text for that agent only. HighLevel's own advice, which Andrew repeats, is to be careful. The defaults are tested and maintained by their team. Once you edit one, keeping it working is on you.
Two buttons are your safety net. Apply Recommended resets every system prompt to the latest version from HighLevel, which is also how you pick up their improvements later. Clear All deletes them, so the agent runs on your main prompt alone. Andrew is honest about that second option. You could write all five modules yourself, but they probably will not beat the defaults. Test hard before you trust it.
When a custom edit is worth it
The video points at numbers and email as the places where editing pays off. Some examples from the kind of calls we see:
- A street name or city your callers say a certain way, and the agent keeps saying it wrong.
- Unit and suite numbers that need to be read a specific way for your crew to find the job.
- A personality tweak so the agent matches your brand, more formal for a law office, warmer for a pet groomer.
- A booking rule that matches how your calendar actually works.
Change one module, make test calls, listen. If it gets worse, Apply Recommended and try again. Do not rewrite everything at once, or you will not know which edit broke it.
Why This Matters for Bay Area and San Jose Businesses
Most owners here are on a job when the phone rings. A San Jose plumber under a sink, a Campbell dentist with a patient in the chair, a Los Gatos contractor on a roof. A voice agent that picks up is only worth it if callers trust it. One mangled phone number or a wrong appointment day, and the caller hangs up and dials the next listing on Google.
Exposed system prompts let you fix that kind of miss without guessing. You can read exactly why the agent says what it says, change the one rule that does not fit your business, and reset in one click if it goes sideways. And because it lives in your own HighLevel account, the agent and its prompts belong to you, not to an agency renting it to you.
Practical Steps
- Open AI Agents, then Voice AI, and pick the agent from your agent list.
- Switch the agent's goals to Advanced mode and open View System Prompts.
- Read all five modules before you change anything, so you know what the agent already handles.
- Make test calls with your real edge cases: your addresses, a phone number, an email, a booking request.
- Edit only the module that caused a problem, then call again.
- If results get worse, click Apply Recommended to go back to HighLevel's defaults.
- Write down every edit, so you know what to recheck after HighLevel ships an update.

Final thoughts
Exposed system prompts turn the HighLevel Voice AI agent from a black box into something you can read and adjust. Start with the defaults. They are good. Edit when a real call shows you a real problem. On Point Tech Solutions is a Go High Level San Jose consultant based in Los Gatos, serving the whole Bay Area. We set up and tune Voice AI agents done for you, or teach your team with an SOP, and the agent stays in your account.
