Google Ads Retargeting Inside HighLevel: Audience Segments Explained

Google Ads Retargeting Inside HighLevel: Audience Segments Explained

Key Takeaways

Here is the part of Google Ads that bugs every owner we talk to. You pay for the click. Somebody lands on your page. They leave. And then you pay again to find a brand new stranger instead of going back to the person who was already interested. HighLevel just walked through a fix for that. In a new tutorial from HighLevel's Content Army, Tina shows how to build Google audience segments right inside the HighLevel Ad Manager. At On Point Tech Solutions in Los Gatos we set up Go High Level Bay Area accounts for local businesses every week, so here is what the video covers and how we would actually use it.

The four segment types, in plain English

Customer Match uses your own list. Upload a CSV or pick a smart list you already built in HighLevel. It is best for existing customers and loyalty offers.

Website Visitors targets people who visited specific pages on your website or funnel, or who took an action there. Tina calls it the tool for remarketing and cart recovery. Somebody looked at your offer and something stopped them. Maybe the copy was off, maybe the price. Now you get a second shot at them.

Interest segments reach people based on what they search for and how they browse. You can target people searching certain terms, people who visit sites like your competitors, or people who use apps like yours. This one is for awareness and prospecting.

Lookalike segments find new people who look like your current customers. This is for acquisition, and it only works as well as the seed list you feed it.

How to build a segment in HighLevel

Go to Marketing, open Ad Manager, click Settings, then Google Ads, then Audience Segments. Hit Create New Segment and pick the type.

For Customer Match, upload a CSV (there is a sample file to copy the format) or choose a smart list. Set the membership duration, which maxes out at 540 days. Name it, describe it, and check the box that says you got this data with the person's consent. Tina is blunt about it: you cannot just scrape a list and upload it.

For Website Visitors, choose how far back to look. Her suggestion is 60 days for a warmer audience. Add conditions with And and Or, like a specific URL someone visited. You can start the segment empty or prefill it with people who matched in the last 30 days. Give it a name tied to the offer, like the Black Friday page, so you know what it is six months from now.

For Interest, list the interests, purchase intents or search terms. Her example was a pet brand targeting anyone who Googles "dog leash".

For Lookalike, pick a seed list, pick locations, then choose how wide to go: narrow at 2.5%, 5%, or broad at 10%. Narrow is closer to your customers. Broad is bigger and looser.

Using segments in a Google campaign

Go to Campaigns, create a Google campaign from scratch or from the Ad Manager template, and open the audience segment tab. Pick your segments there. If you have not built one yet, you can build it right from that screen.

There are also audience signals Google defines for you. Affinity is lifestyle and general interest, good for top of funnel. Tina's tip: go broad, then exclude your existing customers and website visitors so you are not paying for people who already know you. In-market is people actively researching and comparing products like yours. That is warmer, better for lead gen and retargeting, and she suggests pairing it with Customer Match or Website Visitors and testing a smaller audience first.

The rules to know before you launch:

Why this matters for Bay Area and San Jose businesses

Most of the local owners we meet around San Jose already run Google Ads or tried it once. The common story is the same. They paid for clicks, got some calls, and could never tell who came back. Website Visitors fixes the "they looked and left" problem, and exclusions fix the "we keep paying to reach our own customers" problem. Both matter more in a market where every click costs real money.

The bigger win is that it all lives in the same place as the CRM. Your smart lists are already in HighLevel. The customer who booked last spring can go into a Customer Match list for a seasonal offer, and the one who just paid can be excluded from the cold campaign. You are not exporting spreadsheets between two tools anymore.

Practical Steps

  1. Connect your Google Ads account inside HighLevel Ad Manager first. Nothing else works until you do.
  2. Build one Website Visitors segment for your main offer page, 60 days back, prefilled with the last 30 days.
  3. Build a Customer Match segment from a smart list of past customers, and only use contacts who gave consent.
  4. Add both as exclusions on any cold prospecting campaign.
  5. Wait the 48 hours for sync before you judge anything.
  6. Once you have a solid customer list, test a narrow 2.5% Lookalike in your service area on a non-Search campaign.
